Emerging from where and expressing what?
I'm a fan of emerging church and fresh expressions even if hearing those phrases for the trillionth time makes me want to stop up my ears with plasticine. But the more I hear of the latest network church, cutting edge community or alt.worship innovation, the more I wonder how long it will be before we realise we're not talking about the same thing. I can understand the need to find a way of being church that swims rather than sinks in Postmodernity but that's not the same as a church with Post-Christendom credentials. Flotillas of so-called 'emerging churches' are sailing into the brave new Postmodern world assuming that any amount of Christendom baggage -clericalism, establishment, just war thinking, sacramentalism or hierarchy - can be safely stored away in the hold, to be offloaded and transplanted on some freshly discovered Contintent. I only hope that amidst all the loud proclamations of the demise of Christendom we haven't underestimated the sheer tenacity of the beast - its awful capacity for reinvention.
